Navigate PAC represents all students, families, and programs in the NIDES School District.
In order to support equitable allocation of our Gaming Grant Funds, we are asking for feedback from our members as we set spending priorities.
>> Some programs may have limited seats available, and we will do our best to support inclusion, and open up more seats if the opportunity allows. You will be notified when your RSVP has been accepted. Programs will fill qualified participants in a first-come-first-served basis.
>>> Knowing what is wanted by our community allows us to provide the best fit.
>>> Per gaming grant rules, all Gaming Grant activities MUST be *EXTRACURRICULAR.* This means you may NOT use these programs as part of your reporting for your Student's education. DO NOT include these programs in your Student Learning Plan, SeeSaw, Canvas, MySite, Portfolio.
>>> Some programs are open to all students participating in the NIDES School District.
>>> Some may be site-specific, serving one site/location/neighborhood/program.
>>> Some programs may be limited to a few sites or programs, where the program is available.
>>> Some programs may be limited to specific students.
It is up to the Program Lead to design a program that is a match for their volunteered leadership.
Any member of Navigate PAC- Families with a student participating with Navigate NIDES programs!
Please submit your proposal to navigatepac@gmail.com
Proposals will be submitted for review:
if they qualify AND
if funding is available AND
at the next round of proposals OR at the next program-focused PAC Meeting, depending on what is most appropriate.
Some programs are FREE, most are less than $5. Some programs are open to everyone, some programs have a limit. A few opportunities are $20-60 per student. Just like in a Brick and Mortar School, some students will participate in various clubs and activities, each with a variable price range. The PAC reserves the right to limit each student to ONE higher-priced program per program year, in order to serve as many students as possible.
We are planning through the 2020-2021 year to offer programs that are online or individual family participation. Given the changing nature of restrictions, our Volunteers are offering ways to participate without gathering in person. This allows our Volunteers to plan once, for what we know will work, without having to adapt or cancel.
Some activities have age or grade level requirements. Grade Levels are indicated for the audience for whom the program is delivered. For many programs, there can be flexibility for your Student to attend a nearby grade (for example, a 3rd grader may be able to attend a 4th grade activity). Parents are expected to bridge any gaps between program delivery and Student understanding. Ultimately, it's for the Program Leader to decide the level of grade/age flexibility.
More rounds may be opened up if funding remains available.

Patterns in the Night Sky (45mins) - Grade 1
The sky is full of observable patterns and cycles. We will explore some of the patterns associated with day and night and seasons, how those patterns change what we see in the sky and how they affect living things.
Think Like an Astronomer (45mins) - Grade 1
What does an astronomer do and how do they make their discoveries? Students will be introduced to the scientific method and discover how astronomers use observation, questioning, predicting and analyzing to make new discoveries.
Connections between the Sun, Moon and Earth (60mins) - Grade 4
The relationship between the Sun, Moon and Earth has a big effect on our lives. Students will discover more about the phases of the Moon, tides and seasons, and how local First Peoples observed seasons.
Mining Quest (60mins) - Grade 5
In this role-play-based program, a diamond has been found in Canada’s far north, the challenge to your students is to apply their understanding of the rock cycle and the thinking processes a geologist would use in the field to locate a potential source for that diamond. Our facilitators will work with teams of students to examine clues, apply their knowledge and collaborate to locate the source of the diamond.
Exploring Extreme Environments (60mins) - Grade 6
How do scientists locate planets in solar systems beyond ours and how do they know so much about distant planets? Discover more about exoplanets (planets in other solar systems), and how scientists use Earth-based environments as analogues for studying environments on other planets.
The Universe (60mins) - Grade 6
Travel from Earth through our solar system and into the universe beyond our Milky Way galaxy. Students will be introduced to some of the recent discoveries that expand our understanding of the universe.
Stories in the Stars (60mins) - Grade 7
Constellations are more than just connect-the-dot shapes - they reveal stories told over centuries that connect us to the cultures that created them. We will explore what makes a good story and challenge your students to develop and share their own constellation myth.
Note: you can add-on to this experience with a second, 60-minute live session where your students come together to share their stories and we will provide feedback on the stories they’ve developed and their presentations.
Astronomer’s Periodic Table (60mins) - Grade 9
Where do elements come from and how are they cycled through the universe? How would astronomers use chemistry to study distant planets and stars? What would Earth’s chemical “fingerprint” look like from another solar system? Students will find answers to these questions and learn about the origins of elements and the periodic table.
Cosmology 101 (60mins) - Grade 10
What is the theory of the Big Bang and what does this theory suggest about an end to our universe? Are there universes other than the one we live in? We’ll talk about some of the biggest theories and questions in and about the universe and leave your students with even more questions to explore.
Stars (60mins) - Grade 10
See stars like you’ve never seen them before. We will take you on a journey through the life of a star, from its birth in a stellar nursery to the majestic pulse of a neutron star, and discuss how astronomers use spectroscopy to study stars and the planets that orbit them.
Join a group of book loving teens for a monthly zoom meet up. We’ll pick a new YA book to read each month to read, discuss, and share our book recommendations.
The First Book: Scythe (Arc of a Scythe #1) by Neal Shusterman
From GoodReads.com:
Thou shalt kill.
A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.
Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.
Cost paid by Navigate PAC: ~$20 per person for Indigo Gift Card.
Time: Weekday afternoon
